Siarter Iaith

Siarter Iaith or Cymraeg Campus

The Siarter Iaith, also know as Cymraeg Campus, is a project introduced by the Welsh Assembly to all schools in Wales, to promote the Welsh language, to develop a Welsh ethos and encourage pupils to improve their Welsh language skills. The Charter provides a framework for schools to follow in order to achieve the awards.

Crymlyn Primary school started their journey on the Siarter Iaith in December 2017. We set up a Criw Cymraeg which has developed over the years. The Criw currently lead school assemblies and also run clubs at playtimes and lunchtimes for children from Year 1 to Year 6. The clubs run are Welsh yard games and a colouring, word searches and card games club. They have planned and arranged competitions to create welcome posters, a competition for Mr Urdd 100 birthday and also competitions run by the Welsh athrawes fro for the rugby and football World Cups. Weekly, they distribute stickers and certificates for children who they hear speaking Welsh and they liaise with staff to choose ‘siaradwr yr wythnos’. They love the Welsh language and ethos and are great ambassadors.

We achieved our Safon Efydd- Bronze Award in 2019 and we were all proud of the achievements and the difference we had made.

We are currently working towards the Safon Arian – silver award – and children and staff are eager to promote the language and culture of Wales and achieve the award.

The award consists of 10 target areas with approximately 10 targets per area. These targets promote and encourage the use of Welsh across the school both in class and in the environment. They encourage learners and staff to use the language in everyday activities. They promote a Welsh ethos in school and encourage learners to understand and share the importance of being proud to be from Wales and take pride in the history and people from Wales.

As we work our way through the targets for the Silver award it is lovely to see the Welsh ethos developing and growing at Crymlyn, from the youngest pupils to all members of staff.
